The WTO ruled in favor of the EU in a case against India’s tariff on certain ICT products, finding that the tariffs were illegal and not in line with India’s WTO commitments. The affected EU exports are up to €600 million annually, with a greater impact on European companies that also export to India from other countries. India’s justifications for the tariffs were not accepted by the panel, and no mistake was found in determining India’s tariff commitments. The EU initiated the dispute settlement case in 2019, with Japan and Taiwan filing parallel cases covering the same issue. The WTO is expected to rule on these cases on April 17, 2023.
