The basic VAT principles are fairly universal and broadly speaking, VAT systems across the world appear equal in what they seek to tax.
However, when it comes to the VAT treatment of active investment holding companies, the South African Revenue Authority (“SARS”) seems to be considering itself to be somewhat more equal than others, by maintaining that the VAT incurred does not rank for deduction.
