Platform operators’ customer awareness process: Control of tax registration number and VAT registration number

The EU currently provides, free of charge, two different electronic services for checking tax registration numbers and VAT registration numbers issued by a country within the EU:

• TIN’s online check to check the tax registration number of natural persons. The service can only check that the current tax registration number is correctly structured, i.e. that it has a valid structure with the correct number of digits and characters.
• VIES to check VAT registration numbers. In the service, information can be retrieved on whether the registration number is valid and who holds it.
