Recent media reports about shortages of fresh fruit and vegetables in the UK point the finger of blame at poor growing conditions and transport difficulties in producer countries such as Spain and Morocco, where much of the UK’s requirements are sourced, alongside other Mediterranean countries. The increasing cost of fuel is also cited as a major contributor to shortages, in respect of both the cost of heating greenhouses as well as fuelling transport.
