Skatteverket: Major changes await in the area of VAT in the EU

On December 8, 2022, the EU Commission is proposing a series of measures to modernize the VAT system, it must be adapted to digitization and made more resistant to fraud. Member countries will eventually be obliged to exchange information about their cross-border trade.

– The Tax Agency is looking forward to a development that can lead to reduced VAT fraud and reduced tax errors. It is also very positive that e-invoicing and reporting almost in real time to the tax authorities can create a digital transformation in the accounting and taxation processes at companies, says Björn Erling, section manager at the Swedish Tax Agency.

The changes primarily affect the VAT area, but will also have consequences in other areas, for example requirements for e-invoicing and transaction-based accounting can prevent and counter crime.

– There are also significant environmental and sustainability gains with the proposed rules, in addition to the benefits that e-invoicing itself will have. From the Swedish Tax Agency’s point of view, the proposal could mean new opportunities to support our VAT customers with new services related to their VAT reporting and better opportunities to target our controls more effectively, says Björn Erling.
