The Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system was closed for imports from 30 September 2022 and replaced with the Customs Declaration Service (CDS). HMRC allowed businesses to continue to use CHIEF beyond this deadline on a temporary basis, provided they obtained (or at least requested) permission from HMRC.
