The VAT on fruit and vegetables must be abolished as soon as possible, starting with only the VAT on unprocessed fruit and vegetables, and to abolish VAT on all healthy fruit and vegetable products as soon as possible. This is stated in a motion that the Senate adopted on November 1, 2022.

Note from editors: The Motion has been adopted, which does not mean that it will be implemented. Furthermore, on the same date, a Motion to reduce the VAT rate on ‘groceries’ to 0% was not adopted. Both Motions show the wish of the Senate to do ‘something’ with VAT, in order to reduce day-to-day costs for Dutch citizens. For the Motion on the reduction of VAT on fruit, the environmental argument also plays a role. In any case, there will be a lot of discissions coming up on the definition of fruit and vegetables, if this Mtions will be discussed later.
