On 5 April 2022, the EU Council adopted a directive enabling a fundamental overhaul of VAT rates in all member states. The new rules allow the wider use of reduced rates, including the use of zero rates for essential products such as food, pharmaceuticals and products for medical use.
Correction to the article: The legislation will come into force once published in the Official Journal of the European Union (see Link), allowing member states to apply the new system as of that date.
