Agreement on implementation Plastic Tax in Spain as of Jan 1, 2023

Spanish government has just approved the new Law on “Waste and Contaminated Soils” which transposes Directive (EU) 2018/851 on waste and Directive (EU) 2019/904 on reducing the impact of certain plastic products on the environment.

Among other measures, the new Law published today introduces a plastictax on non-reusable plastic packaging, applicable as from January 1st, 2023.

This new law is the main piece of the regulatory package on the circular economy and waste, where in addition to updating the waste regulations, one of the main environmental challenges of today is addressed: single-use plastics. “It comes to complete the work carried out throughout the legislature, in which, in addition to the Spanish Circular Economy Strategy and its First Action Plan, six royal decrees on waste have already been approved”, Ribera highlighted.

The text approved today is also one of the keys to promoting the circular economy in Spain and has been included as one of the structural reforms of the Plan for Recovery, Transformation and Resilience (PRTR).
