HMRC Research and analysis: MTD – additional VAT revenue of approximately £185m

HMRC have published a statistical research paper evaluating the additional tax revenue generated by Making Tax Digital for VAT.

MTD was introduced in order to improve the accuracy of VAT returns, in particular by reducing arithmetical and transposition errors, and was therefore always expected to produce some additional tax revenue.

The report estimates that additional VAT revenue of approximately £185m has been collected as a result of MTD, compared to a previous estimate of £115m. For businesses trading above the VAT registration threshold (who have been required to use MTD since 2019) this amounts to additional tax revenue averaging £57 per business per quarter.
