State Secretary Van Rij of Finance responds to a letter to the standing committee for Finance about the limited communication about malfunctions in the European system VIES (VAT Information Exchange System). This communication is limited because the tax authorities have no influence on the operation of VIES.
VIES is an online search engine that directly searches the databases of the Member States. With the system, entrepreneurs can check the VAT number of a customer within the European Union (EU). Responsibility for the system rests with the European Commission (EC). Member States are solely responsible for the accuracy and availability of the national VAT number database.
