Curaçao Minister of Finance Javier Silvania published on his Facebook that Curaçao maintains the six percent rate of sales tax.
In Curaçao, the standard Sales Tax rate is currently 6%, but certain goods and services are taxed at different rates. For example, hotel accommodation is taxed at 7%, and food and drinks usually have a rate of 9%, except for ‘basic foods’, such as bread and eggs (an exemption applies).
The main rule is that, in principle, VAT cannot be deducted. This is actually only possible in special situations, with regard to the import of goods. Unfortunately, it is not possible for foreign entrepreneurs to submit a VAT refund request in Curaçao.
The Minister of Finance indicated that “now is not the time to introduce an increase in the rate.” Plans to withhold sales tax from a payment with a debit card immediately and deposit it into the government’s account, remain in place.
