Many people are working from home these days. As a result, many VAT entrepreneurs purchase products or services to facilitate their home workplace, for themselves or for their employees. Generally speaking, the VAT on these costs should be recoverable. Or not?

Note from the editors: This article points out one of the effects of the global Covid-19 pandemic as well as one of the biggest issues that companies are sometimes only now thinking of: what to do with VAT on (employee) expenses? Before, it used to be mostly (foreign) VAT on traveling costs, such as hotels, taxi’s etc. Now there is a shift to domestic VAT on domestic expenses. The current situation shows that in many companies, the expense claim policies are not always aligned with the VAT refund processes and rules.
