This year, the tax authorities are unable to issue the new VAT identification number to businesses within five working days. Due to additional process steps, five days is not a realistic target, says the tax authorities in the first progress report for 2020. The target value of this performance indicator will be reconsidered for 2021.
As of 1 January 2020, a new VAT identification number was introduced that is not related to the citizen service number (BSN) of the entrepreneur. In addition to the VAT identification number, entrepreneurs keep their old sales tax number for filing VAT returns and communicating with the tax authorities.
Increasing treatment time
The new VAT identification number leads to additional process steps. As a result, the processing time for applications for a sales tax number and VAT identification number has increased from five to eight days. The Tax and Customs Administration does not achieve the performance indicator of allocating a VAT identification number within five working days this year. This performance indicator is not realistic for 2021 either. That is why reconsideration follows.
Other topics from the 2020 progress report are discussed in the message Fewer due diligence and company visits to the Tax and Customs Administration due to corona crisis .
