A recent case in the first tier Tribunal is a reminder of the VAT requirements and consequences of exporting to a place outside the EU. This is timely, as businesses have enjoyed the benefits of the EU Single Market since 1993 for the majority of their trade, one of which is a refined system of VAT compliance. This must change at the end of the transition period (now promised to be December 2020) as businesses must adopt the new rules post Brexit (whatever they may be) and the current rules for exporting outside the EU will most likely set the standard for this. Indeed, this has now been specifically confirmed by the UK Government who are now telling importers and exporters to expect and prepare for frontier checks for all movements of goods.
