The European Commission recently revealed an extensive package of proposals, marking what could be the most ambitious reform of the EU Customs Union since its inception in 1968. The aim of these measures? To generate more revenue from customs duties, combat the importation of illegal goods, adjust customs regulations to match the rapidly evolving e-commerce environment, and unify customs operations across EU Member States.Accompanying VAT measures are also being presented to build on the new e-commerce rules customs. The customs threshold of 150 EUR for duty relief is being abolished and e-commerce platforms will henceforth be responsible for settling import VAT and duties. This blog will cover various significant aspects of the proposed reforms.
