How does E-Invoicing work in Ecuador?

In Ecuador, electronic invoicing (E-Invoicing) is mandatory for all taxpayers who carry out commercial and economic activities, regardless of their size or sector. Here’s how it works:

  1. Registering for E-Invoicing: Businesses must register with the Internal Revenue Service (SRI) to receive authorization to issue electronic invoices. This process involves obtaining a digital certificate and submitting various documents to the SRI.
  2. Generating Invoices: Once registered, businesses can generate electronic invoices using approved software. The invoice must contain certain mandatory information, including the taxpayer’s identification number, the buyer’s identification number, the invoice date, and the amount of the transaction.
  3. Transmitting Invoices: The electronic invoice must be transmitted to the SRI within 24 hours of issuance. This can be done through various channels, including online portals or approved service providers.
  4. Approval and Validation: The SRI validates the electronic invoice and assigns it a unique code. The invoice is then sent to the buyer via email or other electronic means.
  5. Storage and Archiving: Electronic invoices must be stored for at least seven years and be accessible to the SRI upon request.

In summary, E-Invoicing in Ecuador involves registering with the SRI, generating electronic invoices using approved software, transmitting them to the SRI for validation, and storing them for a set period.
