Withholding VAT in the EAEU countries for online commerce changed

The Eurasian Economic Union is an economic union of some post-Soviet states located in Eurasia. The Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union was signed on 29 May 2014 by the leaders of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia, and came into force on 1 January 2015.

On December 9, at a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, the heads of the EAEU states signed a protocol amending the procedure for collecting VAT when providing services in electronic form on the territory of the Union, Uchet.kz reports.

According to the new rules, in case of cross-border purchase of services in electronic form on the territory of the EAEU, VAT will be taxed at the location of the buyer. Prior to this, there was no common approach on this issue, which led to double taxation or to a situation where such commercial activities were not taxed in any of the member states.
