Lawyer and tax adviser Redmar Wolf of Baker & McKenzie is happy that nothing has come of the proposal. “The system of changes sounds cool for the stage, but I don’t think it’s going to help,” says the lawyer. Wolf points out that due to technological developments, it should now be possible for tax authorities to refund VAT only if they have actually received it.
‘VAT fraud is actually the dumbest fraud there is, because the tax authorities always find out. The sooner that happens, the smaller the damage. ‘ For the time being, the solution therefore seems to lie in investigation and prosecution. These are now the most important means in the fight against VAT fraud, according to the FD.
